Looking at the last 13 winners of the much-coveted International Engine of the Year Award, you'll notice that BMW has dominated the scene with 5 wins, whilst the best new engine award went to the Munich-based company 6 times.
Those numbers are testimony to the quality of BMW's engines. That's probably why PSA Peugeot Citroen turned to them when they needed a new engine. Back in 2004 the production of a joint-venture engine going by the N13 (and N18 for MINI) codename began.

The engine has remarkable features and can turn out up to 218 HP, as fitted on the MINI Cooper JCW versions. Furthermore, it was even used by Saab to power their last concept vehicle, the Saab PheoniX (in which it pushed out 200 HP).

Nowadays, the 1.6-liter unit is powering BMW's F20 114i, 116i and 118i models and the F30 316i and 320i EfficientDynamics variations of the 3 Series.
