It was 2005 when BMW reached the number one spot in the contest with Audi and Mercedes-Benz regarding luxury cars sales and things didn’t change in 2013 either. With 1.66 million cars sold last year, the Bavarian company managed to fend off its contestants once again.
BMW brand sales rose by 7.5 percent whilst Mercedes-Benz is inching in on Audi, claiming that it will overtake the Ingolstadt-based company by 2015.

The four-ringed brand recorded an 8.3 percent sales increase in 2013, reaching 1.58 million cars sold, thanks to its new A3 and SUV range. At the same time, Mercedes recorded the biggest sales increase with 11 percent more cars sold, reaching a grand total of 1.46 million cars last year.

At the moment, BMW’s 3 Series hold an iron grip on the segment it’s leading, selling more than 500,000 units over the last 12 months but things might change a bit in the near future with the introduction of the new C-Class from Mercedes.

Prospects for this year seem to favor BMW again, as IHS Automotive expects the Munich-based company to sell close to 1.77 million cars in 2014, more than Audi’s projected 1.66 million and Mercedes’ 1.56 million.
