BMW’s 2 Series range is set to receive a new body style in a few years. According to company insiders and reports, the Bavarian automaker is planning to build a “Gran Coupe” version of the 2 Series.
The new entry in the range is expected to come to market by 2019, and it is seriously considered to also spawn an M2 version.

While nothing is official yet, the German manufacturer is pondering the launch of a four-door model that is longer than the ongoing 2 Series Coupe.

Its wheelbase is set to be shorter than that of the ongoing 3 Series, but it will extend when compared to the current 2 Series Coupe and Cabriolet models.

According to Autocar, company insiders have revealed that BMW is still undecided between a “Gran Coupe” and a five-door “liftback” body for the next model in the 2 Series range.

While the Gran Coupe would follow the brand’s tradition with the 4 Series and the 6 Series, models with odd numbers in their names, the liftback body style would bring a new level of practicality for the 2 Series.

After all, the production version of the Concept Compact Sedan, a front-wheel-drive version of the 2 Series that is being made in China and only sold there, BMW still needs a practical proposition in the segment.

No matter what body style will be decided for the four-door model planned in the 2 Series lineup, it will have a longitudinally-placed engine. This decision will mean that the M2 version will be able to borrow the six-cylinder power plant from the ongoing M2 Coupe.

Transmissions, powertrains options, and technologies will be taken from the Coupe version of the BMW 2 Series. To refresh your memory, the 2 Series is the only model in the BMW lineup that has two completely different platforms for its two separate variants.

The Active Tourer/Gran Tourer MPVs are based on the UKL front-wheel-drive architecture, while the Coupe/Cabriolet variations have a rear-wheel-drive configuration and optional xDrive. As explained above, it's the latter that will be used for the 2 Series Gran Coupe.
