In a sport such as bobsledding, the difference between gold and silver on a podium is usually made by one tenth of a second. For example, at the last Olympics, in Vancouver, the second and third place finishers were separated by one one-hundredth of a second. That’s close!
That was also the reason why Team USA wanted to change their bobsled to make it even faster and better and to replace the 20-year old platform they were using up until now.

They went to BMW, a company that knows a thing or two about speed, lightweight and photo finishes. The man that took over the whole project was Michael Skully, the Creative Director over at BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

Over the course of a year, the new bobsled started taking shape. Being made out of carbon fiber and kevlar, the weight was perfectly distributed and complied with the regulations of the Olympics, weighing 347 lbs empty and 859.8 lbs with the crew and equipment aboard.

The new sled was properly tested in wind tunnels and on various tracks and had to meet all the drivers’ expectations before being officially approved. Hopefully, this year, Team USA will manage to win the gold for the first time since 1936!
