Despite nearly all manufacturers showing a decrease in sales across May, BMW posted a record month with 31,003 units sold in the US, an increase of 4.7 percent. This might sound like just a number but in the grand scheme of things, it’s a lot more.
You see, for the last year and a half, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been duking it out in the US in terms of sales and the battle is far from over. The increase allowed BMW to come within just 479 units of its arch-rival that stole its crown this year.
The best sellers for the Bavarians were the 3 and 4 Series models that recorded an increase of 18 percent overall while the X5 exceeded everyone’s expectations, going up by no less than 34 percent.
The Stuttgart-based company, on the other hand, managed an 11 percent increase compared to last year in May, selling 29,583 units. As you can tell, theoretically BMW sold more cars last month but on a year-to-date basis, the three-pointed star brand still has the lead.
In absolute numbers, cars wearing the blue and white roundel on their bonnet were sold in 136,447 units so far in 2015 while their rivals delivered 136,926 autos to their happy owners.
Fortunately, in the near future, the luxury segment might see this two-horse race turn into a trio with Lexus coming up fast. The Japanese company sold 29,671 units last month, an increase of 10 percent, thanks to its new NX and RX SUVs. On a year-to-date basis, the Toyota sub-brand accounted for 132,727 cars.
The only other German name in the pot, Audi, isn’t doing all that well. Sure, they posted a 11 percent growth, managing the second-best month since entering the US over 45 years ago but with 18,428 cars sold they can barely hold a candle to the rivals that are selling nearly twice as much.
