Taking inspiration from the FT-HS hybrid sports car concept from 2007, the GR Supra sure took a long time to arrive at dealership lots. The most disappointing thing about the fifth generation is how much of a part BMW had in the development process, borrowing the CLAR platform, six-cylinder turbo engine, and ZF 8HP automatic transmission from the Z4.
There’s no denying the A90 is a Supra only in name, nothing more and nothing less. If you want more evidence about the origin, campaign number 19V653000 states that BMW of North America is recalling seven examples of the breed over “improperly welded seat belt guide loop mount.”

In the event of an accident, the mount is susceptible to damage. This condition takes its toll on the seat belt, which may not properly restrain the driver. In other words, these examples of the GR Supra have an increased risk of injury for the driver. And now, prepare for the most important part...

“If the mount is defective, the vehicle will be replaced, free of charge.” You’ve heard that right, boys and girls! Even though Magna Steyr has world-class quality control at the facility in Austria where the GR Supra is made, an imperfect simple weld could get you an all-new car as simple as that.

Hubert Schlieckmann GmbH is the manufacturer of the seat belt guide loop mount, and a review into the problem indicates that “the supplier had inadvertently used inadequate parts for the welding tool.” In a crash of sufficient severity, 10 welding spots instead of the standard 13 would damage the mount beyond repair, thus compromising the safety of the GR Supra.

There have been no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue, and the estimated population with the defect stands at one percent according to BMW of North America. If Toyota isn’t able to reach any owner of the involved vehicles by phone, he or she will be notified by first-class mail by November 11th, 2019 for further information about the campaign.
