I know this will only make the BMW customers even more suspicious, especially those who know the 2014 R1200RT recall and compensation story, but here we go with yet another recall, even this time it’s about the C600 Sport and C650GT maxi scooters.
BMW C600 Sport and C650GT maxi scooters manufactured between the (inclusive) dates of August 2, 2012 and February 18, 2014 may be confronted with a stalling engine problem caused by a defective camshaft tensioner. BMW says that approximately 1,360 maxi scooters may be affected by this issue, and the manufacturer will notify customers. The recall is scheduled to begin in July 2014, with no crash or injury reported so far, according to official sources.
Customers who reported the problem also mentioned strange noises from the engine, and subsequent engine stalling. After the breakdown, most of the scooters could not be restarted again, with the distribution suffering a major failure due to the improper camshaft tensioners. In the eventuality of an engine breakdown while riding the scooter, instant loss of power and stalling could increase the risk of a crash, BMW reports show.
According to the attached documents, the manufacturer of the tensioners is Kwang Yang Motor Co from Taiwan. Investigations showed that the cause of the excessive wear of the tensioners was a stamping burr, and BMW required the Taiwanese manufacturer to upgrade its stamping tools and processes, for a smoother product finish, but it looks like the old parts have been still used in several vehicles, or at least that’s what we reckon form the story.
