BMW Motorrad North America issued a voluntary recall for 50,184 motorcycles manufactured between 2005 and 2012.
The recall was triggered by discovering that the flanges of the main and auxiliary fuel pumps may crack and leak. In case such cracks occur, fuel may leak from the tank and increase the risk of fire.
BMW motorcycles affected by this issue are the 2005-2011 R-models, 2005-2012 K-models, 2010-2011 S1000RR models, and 2006-2010 HP2 machines.
It looks like BMW has dealt with the flange issue in the past, but no definitive solutions were found, other than reinforcing the flange with a metal collar or replacing the pump altogether.
The BMW recall is expected to begin in February, but customers can also get in touch with BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or via email at [email protected].
