BMW Recalls 2014 and 2015 X5 SUVs for Airbag Problems

After the Takata airbag problem was revealed, sending millions of cars back to their dealers to get their airbags replaced, the world is looking a lot closer to these devices that are supposed to save our lives. BMW themselves had to recall 1.6 million E46 3 Series models alone and it seems like airbag issues are still a thing.

This time, it’s the F15 X5 that is being recalled for a potential problem with its airbags. According to a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration BMW will have to call back 2014-2015 model year SUVs because of an issue with the Head Protection System or HPS for short.

As it turns out, the airbag of the HPS system may not be securely connected to the airbag inflator gas generator. That means that in case of an accident, the airbag won’t be properly inflated, possibly leading to an increased risk of injury.

The models affected are the xDrive35d versions manufactured between August 19, 2014 to February 16 2015 as well as the 2014-2015 BMW X5 xDrive35i, sDrive35i, xDrive50i assembled between August 28, 2013 and February 16, 2015.

As usual, the replacement of the Head Protection System will be done free of charge and all owners will be notified. The recall should kick off around April 1st so in case you don’t get a call from your local dealer, maybe pay them a visit.
