BMW Recalls 2008 R1200 GS, GS Adventure

The North American motorcycle division of BMW is recalling 2008 R1200 GS and R1200 GS Adventure bikes in the country due to a problem regarding the electrical system that may eventually lead to a crash.

A notification published on the official website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informs that "in certain situations, a such as high generator speeds combined with large demands for electrical current, spurious signals could emerge within the motorcycle's electrical system".

The result is fairly dangerous because "if this were to occur, it could affect the pressure sensor signals of the anti-lock brake system control unit", the advisory added. Furthermore, this could cause, in its turn, the ABS to be switched off, NHTSA explains. "However, in such a situation, a warning lamp would illuminate. Normal braking would still be available slow and stop the motorcycle," NHTSA warned. "Any time vehicle control is compromised a crash may occur".

Just as expected, dealerships will inspect the two motorcycle models and will replace the faulty parts, if needed, free of charge. First recalls are expected to being in April 2009.

The BMW R1200 GS Adventure comes equipped with an 1170 cmc engine that develops a maximum power of 105 hp at 7500 rpm and 85 lb-ft of torque at 5750 rpm. The motorcycle boasts a constant mesh 6-speed gearbox with helical gear teeth and a shaft final drive. Other features include twin discs front brakes with four-piston fixed calipers, single disc rear brakes plus two-section frame consisting of front and rear sections, load- bearing engine-gearbox unit.
