BMW Recalls 1 Series (E8x), 3 Series (E9x) and Z4 (E89) in US

This week an announcement from BMW North America stated that BMW 128i, 135i, 328i, 335i and Z4 models will be recalled in order to fix a problem with the connector for the positive battery cable.

The 1 Series coupes (E82) and convertibles (E88) manufactured between December 2007 through July 2011, models 128i and 135i will be recalled.

The 3 Series coupes (E92) and convertibles (E93) manufactured between March 2007 through July 2011, the 3 Series sedans (E90) manufactured between March 2007 and October 2011 and the 3 Series touring (E91) versions made between March 2007 and June 2011 will be called into a BMW service in order to have the problem fixed (this is only valid for the 328i and 335i versions).

Regarding the Z4 (E89) models, all the vehicles manufactured between March 2009 and June 2011 will be recalled.

It seems that the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade in an accelerated fashion over time, resulting in a breakage of the connection and the loss of electrical power to the vehicle.

If this was to happen, the vehicle might unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash. If you own one of the models that will be recalled, you will receive a notification from BMW and the local dealer will replace the positive battery connector and secure it, free of charge.

The recall will begin March 2013.
