Rhode Island’s Counter Balance Cycles shows us how one can make a beautiful ride even sexier!
Back in the day, BMW’s revered R60/5 was a force to be reckoned with among mid-sized motorcycles. In stocl guise, it is put in motion by a four-stroke boxer-twin engine that prides itself with a healthy displacement of 599cc and two valves per cylinder. The air-cooled powerplant is perfectly capable of generating up to 40 wild ponies at about 6,400 rpm and a solid toque output of up to 36 pound-feet (49 Nm) at 5,000 rpm.
A four-speed transmission is tasked with distributing this force to the rear wheel by means of a shaft final drive. Ultimately, this whole shebang leads to a respectable top speed of 103 mph (165 kph). Given its competent characteristics, it’s no wonder Bavaria’s beast became a hot pick for workshops seeking to create a bespoke piece of two-wheeled artwork.
Take, for instance, this majestic R60/5-based showstopper brewed by Counter Balance Cycles a few years back. Rhode Island’s aftermarket artists began by cutting the bike’s stock subframe to make way for a custom alternative, which supports a hand-shaped steel tail section and one gorgeously upholstered single-seater saddle.
Next, the original fuel tank has been discarded in favor of a bespoke module that wears a two-tone color scheme, consisting of polished surfaces and a “Nimbus Grey” base from Audi’s palette. The paintwork is neatly complemented by white pinstripes found on the new tail unit and gas chamber. Since they matched the desired aesthetic, R60’s factory side panels have been retained.
After replacing the standard turn signals with bullet-style counterparts, the CBC team went about honoring the creature’s exhaust system with a pair of stainless-steel reverse megaphone mufflers. These items are joined by top-shelf pod filters worn by the engine’s retuned Bing carbs. Last but not least, the finishing touch comes in the form of an aftermarket handlebar adorned with bar-end mirrors for good measure.
As the photo gallery can attest, this bad boy does a fantastic job at looking the business.
