Half a century ago, BMW Motorrad began production of the /5 series motorcycles at the Berlin Spandau facility. As the annual Motorrad days event gets underway on July 5, the bike maker revealed a special model in honor of that milestone: the R nineT /5.
As one of the most successful lines of motorcycles it ever made, the /5 series needed a worthy flag-bearer. The R nineT /5 is what Motorrad came up with, an exclusive model with unique appointments meant to be a throwback to the family’s history,
A number of the bike’s elements are coated in chrome - the mirrors, exhaust manifold and rear silencer – while other shine in aluminum silver - coating of the engine, gearbox, fork slider tubes, wheel hubs and spokes.
Trying to create a “nostalgic charm but in a contemporary form,” BMW Motorrad designed the double seat of the R nineT /5 just like the one on other bikes of the family, with cross-embossing on the cover, grab straps and white piping.
The bike comes in Lupine Blue metallic paint with smoke effect and a double line marking that spans the length of the fuel tank. On this motorcycle part BMW also fitted the anniversary emblem.
Powered by a 1,170 cc air-cooled engine that develops 110 hp, the R nineT /5 comes equipped as standard with safety features like ABS and ASC, and is fitted with a 2-in-1 exhaust system made of stainless steel with chrome manifolds and rear silencer.
“The new R nineT /5 provides another addition to the successful BMW Motorrad Heritage world of experience, this time with special historical roots: the model marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary /5 series and at the same time the start of BMW Motorrad production at the BMW plant in Berlin Spandau 50 years ago,” said BMW Motorrad in a statement.
BMW did not say when the new bike will become available for purchase, nor did it mention the price tag. More information about the bike can be found in the document attached below.
