Two of the best selling models in the Motorrad stables, the R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT, are getting a major upgrade for 2019, in terms of both engines and rider assist technologies.
One of the most important changes made to the two models is the increase of engine capacity from 1,170 cc to 1,254 cc. This new unit remains true to the flat-twin boxer that has powered the range for decades but adds a bit of modern technology.

The new power plant uses BMW’s ShiftCam Technology, deployed for the first time in the serial production of Motorrad engines. This tech will allow for an increase in power across the speed range, a reduction in fuel consumption and emission levels, and optimized running.

“With the extensively further advanced boxer engine, the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT not only achieve a whole new level of power and torque,” said BMW.

“It was also possible to significantly optimize refinement and running smoothness - especially within the lower engine speed range.

The new power rating for the R 1250 GS using this new engine is now 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6 250 rpm. That is a significant increase from the previous 125 hp at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm at 6,500 rpm.

For 2019, the motorcycles will be also be fitted with Automatic Stability Control and Hill Start Control. ABS, dynamic brakes, and dynamic traction control come as standard.

For the new model year, the bikes come with with the Connectivity suite as standard. That includes a 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen that allows fingertip access to vehicle and connectivity functions.

The R 1250 GS will be offered by Motorrad in two basic finishes and two style variants. The RT comes in one basic color, two style variants and Option 719 Spezial finishes. Pricing has not yet been announced.
