BMW-Qadbak Team to Use Ferrari Engines

BMW Sauber's new team – we're yet to find out it's official name, following its purchase by the Swiss-based foundation Qadbak – will be powered by Ferrari engines in 2010. That's if the International Automobile Federation (FIA) agrees to allow the Swiss based team to compete as the 14th entry in the 2010 Formula One Championship.

The report regarding the new team's engine supplier appeared in the German media earlier today, along with several pieces of information connected to the BMW Sauber – Qadbak transaction. The buyout, confirmed by the German manufacturer on Monday, seems to have cost Qadbak some 80 million euros, as appeared in the Sport Bild.

It's hard to believe the Swiss organization would have paid that amount of money on that deal without making sure they'll be permitted to race in 2010. However, in order to make it official, the FIA needs the approval of all 13 F1 entries for 2010. In a statement to the press yesterday, the ruling body insisted it will push very hard for Peter Sauber's team to make the grid next year.

BMW's press release yesterday also showed optimism in the team's chances of making the field next year. “The team expects to line up on the grid for the first race of the 2010 season,” said the statement.

If securing the Ferrari deal for the upcoming season, the Italian car maker will have no less than 3 teams powered by their units in 2010. Apart from the Maranello works team, Scuderia Toro Rosso also uses Ferrari power plants, although the deal is to run out at the end of this season. The Faenza based team made no suggestions they would want to change engine supplier for 2010, so an extension to the aforementioned contract is expected to be signed very soon.
