At the moment, BMW has production plants in South Africa, United States, India, China, Japan, Canada and Egypt. The first one is actually one of the oldest, being founded in 1968.
Located in Rosslyn, near Praetoria, the factory isn't overlooked by problems though. Just this week, BMW South Africa announced that it's experiencing troubles with its employees that went on strike, causing a loss in production of 1,270 3 Series units, according to Inautonews.
According to Guy Kilfoil, BMW SA Spokesman, the strike was caused by a dispute surrounding nightshift pay. More than 2,150 workers went on strike, slowing the plant's assembly lines to a crawl.
“Unfortunately, the strikes certainly will make it much more difficult to get the necessary support from our parent company in the future when it comes to production allocation and volume,” Guy Kilfoil told Automotive Logistics News.
The company also said that workers received different payment, depending on the hours worked. For example, for overtime worked until midnight, they'd receive a 17 percent bonus, whilst hours worked after midnight are paid 20 percent extra.
