German car manufacturer BMW celebrated a very special anniversary, 25 years of M5 performance, with a ceremony set up to present their one-off E60 M5 CLS. M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, described the car as “the M5 CSL we never built”.
Whereas the regular version of the M5 has a modified 5-liter V10 engine, for this special edition the Germans increased it’s capacity to 5.5 liters. To accomplish this task, the highly strung, 90-degree unit has been enhanced with a longer stroke. An official power output was not announced, but Herr Biermann reckons it should be around 580 hp and 540 Nm of torque, a real important increase over the standard M5.
The front bumper is now different, as it gets an additional air ducts in the place where the license plate is usually located. A carbon fiber increases the capacity of the air box and the secondary oil cooler.
The engine is mounted onto a modified version of the M3’s seven speed double clutch gearbox engineered by Getrag. The driver can use the steering wheel mounted paddles or push/pull gear lever to shift gears. This gearbox offers smoother and more rapid gearshifts than the standard M5 sequential seven speed unit.
In order to decrease the overall weight, the M5 CSL received a carbon fiber roof, reducing the total mass by 50 kg. The interior has been stripped down and the rear seats have been removed, while two carbon seats replace the regular front ones.
Don’t go to the bank just yet as the M5 CSL is only an exercise. BMW has no plans for production.
