RETTmobil is an annual fair for firefighting and emergency response services. Of course, the Fulda-based exhibition is also the place of debut for the newest emergency vehicles. BMW didn’t want to miss the chance, which is why the Bavarian brand prepared no less than four cars and a motorcycle for this event.
The first exhibit of the lot is a BMW R 1200 RT. Modified for an emergency physician, the motorbike wears fluorescent red foiling over Glacier silver paint. Blue LED flashing and rotating signal beacons, audible signaling, side-mounted panniers, and an auxiliary battery are the most important add-ons. The best qualification as an emergency service motorcycle, however, is the performance. 3.8 seconds to 62 mph (100 km/h) and a top end of more than 124 mph (200 km/h) should be enough for most physicians.

The BMW X3 xDrive20d featured in the gallery below is an “all-around command vehicle” according to the German manufacturer. Other than the M Sport package and 20-inch M alloy wheels, the name of the game here comes in the form of the DBS 4000 roof bar signaling system, pressure chamber loudspeakers, and the quarter of blue LED flashers fitted behind the radiator grille and in the tailgate.

Then there’s a BMW X1 xDrive20d. The automaker insists that the car has been modified to be a fire service command vehicle, albeit BMW forgot to attach some photos of the thing. Nevertheless, I can tell you that the special foiling and blue & red flashers are joined by an analog radio system. Nothing less, nothing more.

One of the more surprising cars to debut at RETTmobil 2016 is the BMW 220d xDrive Gran Tourer, a 7-seater compact multi-purpose vehicle modified for emergency physicians. The list of equipment installed to this car includes an auxiliary battery with a capacity of 70 Ah, a multi-purpose roof antenna, Sepura digital radio, accident data recorder, and a partition grille behind the rear seats.

The biggest surprise, however, is the BMW i3 rescue vehicle. The cutesy urban EV boasts Sepura digital radio preparation, Hella RTK 7 special signal roof bar system with a flasher module and a worklight, LED strobe headlights, and fast-charging systems for direct and alternating currents. Emergency services in London, Milan, L.A., and Bavaria added the BMW i3 to their fleet of vehicles.
