BMW Posts First Quadruple Success in the DTM since 1992

If last year, BMW’s DTM teams managed to acquire all three steps of the podium in the Spielberg race, this year, they managed to go even further and claimed the first four positions. It was in the right order as well, with Marco Wittmann claiming the number one spot, to keep its rivals in the Driver’s Championship at bay.

The German youngster is now leading the standings by 39 points ahead of the runner-up, Mattias Ekstrom, the Swedish Audi driver having only 56 points to his name. The second place in Sunday’s race went to Augusto Farfus, followed by Timo Glock and Martin Tomczyk for a perfect finish. This was also the best result for Tomczyk since the 2012 Nurburgring race in Germany.

It was 1992 when BMW managed the same performance, back then happening on the Hockenheimring. Legendary drivers were behind the wheel back then, with Roberto Ravaglia finishing first followed by Johnny Cecotto, Joachim Winkelhock, Franz Engstler and Emanuele Pirro.

“This is a historic success for us today – the first time we have occupied all of the top four positions since Hockenheim in 1992, and the best result since our return to the series. It was a sensational race from Marco Wittmann, Augusto Farfus, Timo Glock and Martin Tomczyk – one driver from each of the four teams in the BMW M4 DTM. Today we can quite literally talk about ‘Four in a Row’,” said Jens Marquardt, BMW Motorsport Director.

As for the other drivers, Bruno Spengler started off from the tenth place on the grid and managed to finish on the exact same position. Joey Hand and Maxime Martin were both penalized with drive-throughs and finished on the 12th and 14th positions while the rookie, Antonio Felix da Costa had to call it quits after just 11 laps due to a technical problem.

The next race will take place on the Nurburgring in two weeks. Until then you can watch the entire Spielberg race in the video below.
