German carmaker, Audi, decide that the Shanghai Auto Show was the best place to launch its new A3 Sedan and everyone is expecting a comeback from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Whilst Mercedes has its CLA, BMW is still lacking a model in this department. However, thing might change in the near future, according to Autoexpress. They talked with BMW's Sales and Marketing Chief, Ian Robertson about the issue.

“BMW is never shy of new segments. There are no plans to do it at the moment, but do we want to do it? We’ll see…”  Robertson told them.

MINI might be a second alternative in case the 1 Series will prove not to be viable. The new UKL platform that will bring us almost 20 new front-wheel-drive models could be used to create the first Sedan MINI, although it would definitely be against the British company's legacy.

“Making a MINI like this certainly wouldn’t be the norm, but then part of MINI’s appeal is not to be normal,” Robertson said.

So, if we were to choose, we'd go with a Sedan 1er, instead of destroying the MINI heritage. The Bimmer could take it easier and would be a better opponent for the Audi on the premium market. Either way, a Sedan 1 Series or MINI is definetly needed in order to fight off the CLA and A3 Sedan.
