Now the i3 is completely revealed and ready to arrive in showrooms later this year, BMW is already exploring the possibility of expanding its zero emission vehicle lineup. Speaking during a conference call, company chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer revealed that BMW is “looking into solutions such as fuel cell-powered electric motors”.
“Our development work on future drive systems is guided by a clear maxim: intelligent spectrum. The same is true of our path towards zero emissions mobility: For urban areas, we have the electric BMW i3. For slightly longer distances we have our plug-in hybrids – such as the BMW i8. And for long distances we are looking into solutions such as fuel-cell-powered electric motors. In the future, options like this will offer short refuelling times and enable long distance travel with zero emissions,” Reithofer said.
Even though details remain brief, Reithofer added that BMW’s future hydrogen-powered vehicle could become a production model: “Here, too, we believe purpose-built vehicle architecture is the right approach for a series vehicle in the future. This is the same as our BMW i family today.”
Well be back on this interesting matter as soon as BMW shares more info on their upcoming fuel cell vehicle project.
