When talking about heritage and style, BMW and Pininfarina are two of the names any serious car enthusiast should be thinking about. And this is probably why BMW's announcement ahead of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este kept us really excited.
Finally, after making us wait for more than a week, BMW has took the wraps off its Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe Concept. Based on the 6 Series Gran Coupe, the Lusso blends everything BMW has to offer in terms of luxury and performance and Pininfarina's renowned design approach. Famed for being able to turn almost any kind of vehicle into a gem, the Italians pulled it off once again.

As a matter a fact, BMW was never on Pininfarina's list back in the 1960s and 1970s, when each and every car the company had designed turned into highly acclaimed head turners. And that didn't stop them from putting on a great one-off vehicle show at the Villa d'Este 2013.

Moving on to the actual concept car, the Gran Lusso was conceived in a perfect elegantly-aggressive manner with its long, muscular hood and luxury-inspiring generous wheelbase. Both clean and menacing, the front end sports BMW's imposing twin kidney grille, telling us that the V12 mill behind it means business. Round the back, the unique tail lamps set a new benchmark in subtle automotive architecture, while the side profile makes a great visual impact thanks to its dynamically-conceived convex taperings.

Inside, the BMW Pininfarina luxury coupe boasts both sportiness and exclusivity through a special color concept, top-quality materials and geometrical details fitted around the cabin. On par with any large luxury sedan as far as legroom is concerned, the Gran Lusso Coupe could probably outgun the finest production cars out there.

"The appeal of this collaboration with Pininfarina is that you get another, very different and special angle on facets like luxury and exclusivity," notes Karim Habib, head of BMW Design. "The Italian company, after all, has always been a byword for these criteria in particular, demonstrating time and again its keen sensitivity and exceptional finesse in these areas. In Pininfarina we have found the ideal partner to lend shape to this vehicle concept."

"The result of this cooperative venture is far greater than the sum of its parts," says Fabio Filippini, head of Design at Pininfarina. "When two such tradition-rich and experienced brands join forces to turn a vision into reality, something utterly new and exciting emerges. From start to finish, this project was defined by a mutual respect for the identity of the other company."
