When BMW exchanged the linear power delivery of a naturally-aspirated engine for the efficiency offered by turbocharging, a part of the fans understood. However, now the company seems to be willing to give in to the V6 temptation, becoming unfaithful to its straight six configuration.
Everybody knows that Mazda has its rotary engines, Subaru has its boxers and, more importantly, BMW has its inline-six. And we are not talking about decades of fan boy attitude. No, BMW's straight six powerplants offer obvious assets such as smoothness and the ability to play with high revs.
However, the Germans have now filed a patent application for a sequential turbocharged engine layout that comes in both a six- and an eight-cylinder form, as BimmerPost reports. The interesting part is that a V6 layout is also part of the deal. Thus, fuel was added to previous rumors indicating this.
Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that we'll see BMW-badged V6, but who knows, maybe someday somebody in Bavaria will just be curious and start such a project.
Who knows, maybe these potential engines will grow on us... However, it is almost certain that the next M3 will get a tri-turbo six-cylinder engine, but if we get to see a V6 in an M3, the car might have to work hard to overcome this image issue (it won't be a problem with new customers, though).
