BMW Offers Wireless Internet in Oz

The Australian division of German manufacturer BMW announced this week it will begin offering starting next month wireless internet functionality for its vehicles/customers. For that to happen, though, the BMW you own must be equipped with a suitable screen, iDrive system and internet capable mobile phone.

“BMW has always been at the forefront of technological innovation and we continue that tradition by offering full in-car access to the internet,” BMW Australia managing director Stavros Yallouridis told GoAuto.

“For many of us, the internet is an integral part of our daily lives which is why the ultimate driving machine must fully support, and be compatible with, our information and communication needs.”

The wireless Internet from BMW costs AU$200 for most of the BMW range, except for the vehicles situated under the luxury car tax – for those, the system costs AU$154.

Internet will not be accessible while the car is in motion though. This is because of navigation purposes, the driver will use the iDrive controller pretty much like they would control a mouse for a computer.

“The beauty of this system is in its simplicity, utilising the driver’s internet capable mobile phone,” added Yallouridis.

Separately, BMW announced last week that for its next generation vehicle will use Harman infotainment systems, including navigation, Internet access, wired or wireless connectivity and embedded flash memory.

The new system will include iSpeech, wireless connectivity, mobile office, navigation, and advanced telematics. It will be built on the NVIDIA system-on-a-chip (SOC) technology, for scalable microprocessor power and graphic performance.
