It is truly an... interesting world we live in these days. After Audi started an interesting trend with its enhanced exhaust systems for the diesel models of the range, BMW seems to be following suit.
Just 10 or 15 years ago such a move wouldn’t have happened, if we’re to be honest. And then again, back in those days, BMW still had proper naturally aspirated engines part of its line-up with a sound that matched them perfectly.

Well, times definitely changed and these days diesels run the market, especially in the EU, BMW’s biggest market overall. Therefore, the Germans decided to offer their torque-loving customers a new set of M Performance exhausts that would make their little ‘tractors’ sound a lot better.

It’s true that these days diesels have improved a lot. They are now close to petrol units in terms of smoothness, especially when considering the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder units BMW is making now. However, the sound is the one big issue here and that’s what they are trying to address.

There’s no going around the typical harshness of the mills, to be honest. Since the combustion process is different, how could you change the way everything sounds without some wizardry? Well, that’s exactly what the Bavarians did.

The new range of M Performance exhaust systems now features an enclosed speaker in the exhaust that mimics the sound a petrol car would make. As you can see from the photos, there’s an extra tail pipe added to the mix, one that will be hidden from sight but will change the way your car sounds like on the road.

In ECO Pro and Comfort modes, everything will be like before but in Sport and Sport+ modes, things will get nasty. The Active Sound design is also included in this package even though some people probably would prefer the exhaust without it.

The list of cars compatible with this upgrade goes like this:
  • 2 Series (Coupe and Convertible): 18d, 20d, 25d
  • 3 Series (Sedan and Touring only): 18d, 20d, 25d, 28d, 30d, 35d
  • 4 Series (Coupe, Convertible, Gran Coupe):18d, 20d, 25d, 30d, 35d

With the new exhaust, all cars that previously were fitted as standard with only one tailpipe will have two of them now, while those with twin tailpipes will get new ones with a bigger diameter.

All of them will be reaching the market on a slow roll out starting this September through March 2016.
