This summer, around July, BMW is expected to launch the face lifted version of the F10 5 Series. No surprises there, however, due to impending Euro6 regulations that have to be enforced, some engines might be taken off the assembly lines.
According to Bimmertoday, the N53B30 engine will be pulled out of production for the facelift version and no replacement has been announced yet. That means that the 530i model that is extremely popular in Europe will basically disappear.
Replacing the 272 HP unit will be problematic. Fitting a more powerful version of the N20 4-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the 5er will definitely not be taken kindly by the BMW community, and the 535i model will be out of reach for some customers.
This is not the only model to face these issues. The N53's straight-six configuration seems to be incompatible with the EU6 standards and complies only with the EU5 regulations. Furthermore, other cars might also be in danger in the near future.
The BMW E82 125i Coupe and E88 Convertible will be also be replaced by the 2 Series and the N52 engines that are fitted on them will be taken out of production for the same reasons and probably be using turbocharged 4-cylinder units.
Another naturally aspirated engine to be replaced is the 4-liter V8 under the bonnet of the current M3. Even though this move was presented as just a return to the straight-six configuration, recent rumors seem to point out that the real reason behind this decision is the smaller amount of CO2 emissions of a turbocharged 6-cylinder unit.
It seems like the naturally aspirated engines are doomed for now and whoever wants to still be able to drive one should definitely hurry up and buy a Bimmeer with that kind of engine before it's too late, since the M3 has already been announced as sold out and the 125i and 530i will soon be replaced.
