BMW Motorrad Says Sales Will Eclipse All-Time Record in 2021

Before the onset of the pandemic last year, BMW Motorrad said they saw they expected to be on track for a year of record motorcycle sales worldwide, but those expected results were ruined.

But now the brand says they’re now back on track with Q3 2021 sales figures expected to reveal that BMW Motorrad will achieve an all-time record year. The last quarter represented the best sales period BMW Motorrad has ever reported and paired with a solid start to this year. The company representatives say they’ve sold 156,609 motorcycles and scooters to customers around the world. The figures represent a 20.8% increase from 2020.

According to BMW, the recent sales success is due to their wide range of products and the introduction of ten new models since the beginning of this year. Granted, a boom year for motorcycle market sales is certainly a factor.BMW says this reporting is based on preliminary numbers and not broken out to markets, segments and models.

The numbers were certainly bolstered by the introduction of the R18 Classic, which is powered by the same boxer-twin monster which is included in all the R 18 variants. Featuring retro cruiser styling and a displacement of 1,802cc, the R 18 was clearly aimed at the U.S. market.

Capable of 4,750 rpm, the huge boxer is said to deliver up to 91 hp, along with 116 pound-feet (157 Nm) of torque at 3,000 revs. The Big Boxer is a two-cylinder engine that represents, at least according to BMW, the “highest-capacity 2-cylinder boxer engine of all time ever used in motorcycle series production.”

The BMW R 18 Classic hit dealerships in February 2021, and it was priced at a very competitive price tag of $17,495, very close to similar models from Harley-Davidson.

It’s likely that BMW Motorrad will reach their expected sales numbers. The division plans to unveil even more new bikes at the EICMA show a month from now.
