BMW Motorrad has released their financial data for 2012, and there's both good and less good news. According to the German group, 2012 saw an increase in revenues, but the profits went down.
BMW sold no less than 117,109 bikes in 2012, and these figures include Husqvarna machines, as well. The number is a new record in unit sales and represents a 3.1% increase over 2011. However, only 2% more BMW bikes were sold, with the biggest increase belonging to the Huskies: 15.8 % more Husqvarna machines went to their owners in 2012 compared to the numbers for the previous year.
The revenues for BMW's bike business went up with 3.8 per cent, but the profits have seen a very serious decline. The profit before financial result (EBIT) went down 80 percent, from €45 million to €9 million ($58.74 mil to 11.74 mil), while the profit before tax decreased from €41 mil in 2011 to €6 mil ($53.25 mil to $7.83), with a whopping -85.4%.
In January, BMW sold Husqvarna to Pierer Industries AG, a company owned by Stefan Pierer, CEO and major stockholder at KTM, and will concentrate on their own bikes from now on.
