BMW Motorrad Passes the 100,000-Unit Mark in Q3

BMW Motorrad announces another record milestone in the 90-year history of the brand: worldwide motorcycle and maxi scooter sales have surpassed the 100,000-unit mark in the first 9 months of a year. BMW sold 100,217 bikes and scooters through September 2014, a constant increase over the entire year to-date and an excellent foundation for the sales in the final quarter.

The figure represents a 7.6% increase over the same period of 2013. Last year, 93,154 motorcycles and maxi scooters had been sold to final customers. September sales are also consistent with the overall trend, with BMW Motorrad pushing 7.8% more bikes in this month than it did back in 2013. It was only years ago when BMW recorded total sales exceeding 100,000 units for the entire year, so things are really working well for the Bavarian manufacturer.

New models launched, more coming soon

2014 has been a very lucrative year for BMW, as multiple models have been introduced and found their way to the dealership showrooms. The R1200GS Adventure and R nineT are complemented by the revamped 2015 BMW S1000RR and the new R1200R and R1200RS.

These two new sport-touring machines will also be joined by the R1200XR crossover which is expected to be launched in early November at the EICMA. We’ll be right next to it when the wraps come off it and bring you hot live news. Another new model is expected at the EICMA, most likely a bagger version of the flagship K1600GT, so stay tuned.

Worldwide, BMW’s strongest single market remains Germany, with just under 25% market share (17,068 units sold), followed by the USA, Italy, France and the UK. In the US, September sales were 4.3% down from the 955 bikes sold in the same month of 2013. After the resounding “stop riding the R1200RT” recall, it looks like customers regained confidence and bought no less than 207 units in September alone. Sales figures have also been good for the R1200GS Adventure and the R nineT.

As the new bikes arrive in sufficient quantities in showrooms and the remaining two will be launched, BMW Motorrad expects that the sales growth trend remains the same. Funny how BMW is not that talkative about the C evolution electric scooter…
