BMW Motorrad has won three of a total of 8 categories in the Motorcycle of the Year 2014 readers’ choice awards. The Bavarian manufacturer won the readers’ votes for the “Touring Bike”, “Sports Bike” and “Trial/Enduros” categories.
Last year, the BMW HP4 was the winner in the Sports Bike category, with more than 27 percent of the votes, and this year’s choices favored the “S1000RR on steroids” once more. The Touring Bike category saw an all-BMW podium, with the K1600GT models ranking the highest, with 18.2% of the total votes, followed by the R12200RT and the F800GT with 17.6 and percent.

The Trial/Enduro category saw almost a quarter of the votes going to the new liquid-cooled R1200GS, confirming once more the huge popularity of the bike. A best-seller in US, the new R1200GS sold almost 30,000 units throughout 2013 and remains BMW strongest bike in the line-up.

BMW Motorrad also enjoyed more podium placements in other categories: 3rd in the Allrounder contest with the K1300S having to give in to the Ducati Multistrada and Kawasaki Z1000. 2nd and 3rd positions also for BMW in the Scooters segment for the C600 Sport, C600GT and C evolution, with the leader being the Vespa GTS 300ie.

The R nineT scored second-best in the Naked category, with the new KTM 1290 Super Duke R as the leader. With no small-displacement bikes available, 2 of the podium places in the 125cc category went to KTM. But things may change soon in this category - read this autoevolution editorial to learn why.
