I've read plenty of books about the American Dream and nowhere does it say that it involves paying now and waiting a couple of years. That's why BMW is making fun of Tesla for taking so ridiculously long with everything.
We get what Elon Musk's company is doing. You can't put "falcon doors" on a crossover over the weekend, just like you can't make the Model 3 affordable yet useful until 2017.
But this is by no means a cheap shot. Even the most hardcore fans of the brand say they are tired of the waiting game. Pre-orders are something we often see in the gaming industry where people get shown something that isn't ready at E3, and they buy it. Even when your Mass Effects and Overwatches are released, they aren't fully tested yet, just like Tesla's cars have been.
Making fun of electric cars used to be a common theme, and it also goes the other way around. Of course, Tesla isn't going to fight back because it doesn't need to. One Tweet and the entire internet will send a bazillion hate emails to BMW USA.
If you think about it, 400,000 people ordering a car they have never driven and waited a year is crazy. Tesla is the only car company in the world that can pull it off because of its reputation. But we'd argue BMW deserves that kind of treatment too. Sure, some 7 Series models were crap, but there has NEVER been a bad 3 Series.
And it's not like the 330e is low tech either, as it offers 72 MPGe from a combination of 87 hp electric motor and 180 hp 2.0-liter turbo. When both of them work together, they can deliver 248 hp for a 0 to 60 time of 5.9 seconds and a respectable top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h).
Sure, the Model 3 could be just as fast if not faster. But why wait? I know a Tesla fan will never drive a hybrid, but you can't say you're a real car fan unless you've tried a fast BMW.
And we're pretty sure Tesla fans will say the 330e "sucks" as an EV. Sure, it can reach 75 mph (120km/h) without burning gas, but its range is limited to 14 miles (22 km) if you are really careful. A Tesla can easily do 10 times that without a hiccup.
