BMW M5 Ends Production Lifespan, Sets New Record

Five years were enough for the BMW M5 to set a new production record high. Now that its production lifespan has come to an end, the German manufacturer revealed it has manufactured a total of 20,548 units of the model. The M5 therefore surpassed production figures of the predecessor model, which was manufactured for a period of six years.

Of the overall number of units produced, 19,523 were M5 Saloons, while 1025 were M5 Touring versions, first introduced back in 2007.

“As an all-round athlete, dominating both the highly dynamic sprint and longer distances, the latest generation, too, is capturing a unique position within the competitive environment. In 2007, the saloon, which was also dubbed by the media as a “businessman’s express”, was joined by the BMW M5 Touring,” a company statement reads.

The fifth generation of the BMW M5 came with a 507 bhp V10 engine, sequential M transmission Drivelogic with seven gears and Launch Control, alongside driver assistance systems such as Adaptive Headlights and M-specific Head-up Display, among others.

However, even though the BMW M5 has ended its production lifespan, the 10-cylinder engine is currently featured in both the BMW M6 Coupe and the BMW M6 Convertible.

The most important market for this model was the United States, with 8,800 vehicles sold here only. The US was followed by the German market (1,647 units), the UK (1,776), Japan (1,357 units) and Italy (512). On the other hand, the BMW M5 Touring enjoyed the greatest popularity in Germany (302 units), the UK (208) and Italy (184).
