BMW M5 Drag Races Ferrari 458 Italia, Something's Not Right with It

When it comes to comparing a mid-size sedan with a supercar on the drag strip, few cars can rise to the challenge. And by few, we mean probably four or five models in the world.

That list includes names like the Audi RS7, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the BMW M5, along with the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, of course. Maybe there are a couple other candidates as well, and yes, we know Audi markets the RS7 as a four-door coupe, but we all know what it really is.

However, for them to keep up with a proper, modern supercar, most of the time, the stock engine isn’t enough. The video we have here shows a BMW M5 drag racing a Ferrari 458 Italia, but there’s no mention of its specs anywhere and we do find it hard to believe that it was stock.

If that were the case, we’d be looking at a 2-ton sedan with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, making 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque and accelerating to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds going up against a much sleeker adversary.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is still regarded as one of the best handling cars of today, despite the fact that its replacement is already out. It uses a 4.5-liter V8 that’s naturally aspirated and puts out 570 HP and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. It also weighs less by nearly half a ton and accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds.

With all of that in mind, there’s no way this BMW is stock. And yes, we know about gearing and torque, but when we have this kind of differences in specs for the stock models, it's hard to make a case for this BMW and it being standard, as the German engineers designed it.

Why are we saying this? Because the darn thing won the drag race, that’s why.
