After yesterday’s leaked images, we knew BMW wouldn’t wait much longer to come out with the M5 CS officially, and if you were waiting to be impressed, well, get ready to meet BMW M’s quickest and most powerful production car ever.
Thanks to its 627 hp (635 PS) 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 engine, weight savings, M xDrive all-wheel drive system, and Active M differential, the 2022 BMW M5 CS is Brabus Rocket 900-levels of quick. It needs just 2.9 seconds to hit 60 mph (96 kph) from a standstill, confirming our suspicions about this being BMW M’s first-ever sub-3-second car in terms of acceleration prowess. Its top speed, meanwhile, is rated at 189 mph (305 kph), whereas 0-124 mph (200 kph) takes 10.3 seconds.

In the U.S., you’ll be able to grab one for $142,995, and you'd best hurry because BMW will only sell it for one model year. Also, aside from the Brands Hatch Grey metallic shade, buyers can alternatively spec the car with BMW Individual matte finishes such as Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic.

Weighing in at 70 kg (154 lbs) less than the M5 Competition, the new M5 CS also boasts retuned bearing springs at the front and rear axle, refined damper control, an 8-speed auto, and beefier anti-roll bar; it also sits closer to the road compared to the regular M5. It does, however, have the same peak torque figure as the M5 Competition, at 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) - not that it needed any more torque.

Moving on to the way it looks, there’s no way we can miss the Gold Bronze accents found on the kidney grille surround, badges, M gills, and even the 20-inch M forged wheels with their Y-spoke design. The BMW Laser headlights shine yellow instead of white when the low beam, high beam, or Welcome Light are selected, as a nod to successful GT race cars of the past.

As for the hood, front splitter, mirror caps, rear spoiler, diffuser, engine compartment cover, and intake silencer, they’re all made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), with some elements featuring exposed carbon fiber. Furthermore, the stainless steel sports exhaust and M Carbon ceramic brakes (with Red calipers as standard/Gold optional) both come at no extra cost.

Last but not least, the interior. It’s one of the sportiest ever designed by BMW for a production vehicle. Four people can sit inside, with the two at the front enjoying a pair of M Carbon seats. There’s black Merino leather throughout, Mugello Red stitching, illuminated M logos for the front seats, outlines of the Nürburgring circuit on the head restraints, an M Alcantara steering wheel with carbon fiber gearshift paddles, plus a fixed lightweight cover for the center console replacing the armrest.

While top speed is something that can always be improved upon, in terms of acceleration it's safe to say this is probably about as quick as the G30 5-Series can get. We’re already looking forward to seeing the M5 CS on the drag strip.
