The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a thing of absolute beauty, no matter what body shape it is in. Be it the full-size limousine or the Coupe you won’t hear us complain about its design. What we were disappointed in was the carry over of some engines.
The biggest disappointment came in the AMG models that are basically using the exact same engines as the rest of the line-up, from the E63 upwards. It’s not that the 5.5-liter V8s are bad but maybe some new mills would’ve been better. We’re just saying....

The guys from Motorsport Magazine took an S63 AMG Coupe for a quick test and while they were at it, they did an acceleration run up to 280 km/h (174 mph). Fortunately, they recorded the run and they also recorded one done with a BMW M5.

Admittedly, the two aren’t even in the same segment but on the power front they do come within inches of each other. Let’s get more into detail.

The BMW is a sporty sedan that uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 making 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque. It can be hooked up to a manual 6-speed gearbox or a 7-speed DCT one that is the most popular choice, by far. With it, the sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.3 seconds.

On the other hand, the S63 uses a bigger plant, a 5.5-liter V8 with two turbos that is rated at 585 HP and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque, a more than impressive number. It too uses a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and is quoted with a 3.9 second run to 100 km/h (62 mph).

On the other hand, the Merc is also heavier even though it is a coupe. It tips the scale at 1,995 kg (4,398 lbs) while the M5 weighs just 1,870 kg (4,122 lbs). Will 25 HP and 220 Nm of torque be enough to compensate? Check it out!
