BMW M4 Will Be As Light as Possible, Gets Turbocharged Engine

For a while now there have been rumors going around the internet that the upcoming BMW M4, the M3 Coupe replacement, will be returning to the traditional inline 6-cylinder engine that was used on all models, excepting the E92.

We guessed the engine will be an upgraded version of the N55 unit that is currently used in various models, including the majestic M135i. However, this one would be bearing the traditional "S" in front of the numbers and will be developing more than 400 HP.

Luckily, the guys from Top Gear UK got to talk to Matt Collins, BMW's product manager for small to medium cars at BMW, with whom they caught up at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Matt, of course, couldn't say too much about the new car but as little as he said, brought some new light into the matter. Finally, a BMW official confirmed what we suspected: the new M4 will have a turbocharged engine. Collins didn't say just how big it would be, but considering his other statements, it's almost a certainty that it won't be a V8.

Another aspect on which he insisted quite a lot was the fact that the aim is to make the M4 a worthy successor to the E92 M3. That being said, the M4 development process will be focusing on using lightweight technology as much as possible.

In this regard, the main issue is to make the car as dynamic as possible and keep emissions at the lowest possible level. Using CFRP and other innovative technologies discovered when creating the i sub-brand is a must now and we'll be seeing quite a lot of it on the M4.

That being said, it's highly unlikely to see a CSL M4, since the first model that will roll out of the Munich assembly lines will be as light as possible, Matt saying that there will be no compromises.

If you ask us, these are some good news. Not only that now we are almost sure we'll be seeing an S55 engine but we're quite excited to see the work the engineers have done to the chassis of the M4 and how light and dynamic that car will be on the track. That gives us hope that the M3 Coupe will still be a part of our lives, even though it will be called M4.
