BMW M4 Throws Down the Gauntlet at Its Rivals with 1/8-mile Long Burnout

The new BMW M4 benefits from a new mill that has both advantages and disadvantages, as it is always the case. The 3-liter mill uses two similar turbochargers to get 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque down to the rear wheels.

That’s an 11 HP increase over the old E92 M3 which may seem like the tiniest bump but the magic happens in the torque department where things went up by 40 percent with some extra 150 Nm by comparison. All that extra grunt helps out when you want to go out of control.

Like this gentleman here proves using his own BMW M4. The car was put through a treatment that we definitely don’t condone but, to be honest, it all looks too damn cool to overlook.

As a matter of fact, the manufacturer itself is sort of allowing you to perform such impressive burnouts. How come? Well, they introduced a new function on the current M3 and M4 models called ‘Smokey Burnout’. What this does is let you burn rubber for nearly as long as you like.

That might not seem all that surprising at first, but you need to remember that the previous, E9x M3 models, fitted with the 7-speed DCT gearbox were unable to do that due to a software limitation. It was all done to protect the transmission according to BMW, but it’s interesting to note that the new one doesn’t need that protection anymore.

Since the gearbox is the same, it must be down to the rear differential and the prop shaft and, indeed, the new M3 and M4 models use one made of CFRP instead of metal. That should allow it to spin faster and resist higher forces than its conventional alternative.

That being said, the car in the footage has been featured on our website before. It’s the brilliant Azurite Black M4 from BR-Performance that we fell in love with back in 2014. It has the complete M Performance works installed on it as well as an Eibach suspension and an Akrapovic exhaust.

As far as we can tell, this looks like a challenge to see how far others can take their burnouts. The uploader claims the marks on the ground were 200 meters (1/8-mile) long but we have a hard time believing that. Either way, we can't wait to see what others can come up with. Mind you, to keep things fair, they should also be automatics.
