When they make a celebratory model, most companies introduce a new paint scheme, put a plaque on the dashboard and some embroidery on the headrest and call it a day. But not BMW.
The Bavarians have won the driver's title in the DTM series - the German touring championship whey they fought both Audi and Mercedes - so they have plenty to celebrate. To mark the occasion, the M Division is launching the BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition, a car that's a lot closer to the one that helped Marco Wittmann win the title at Hockenheimring than you might expect.

Frank van Meel, President of BMW M GmbH commented: “Congratulations to Marco Wittmann, his team RMG and the entire crew from BMW Motorsport. We have the pleasure of honouring Marco’s performance by producing a BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition in 2016 to mark his winning the DTM driver’s title. Never before has one of our edition models been so closely linked to motor racing.”

First of all, it's a two-seater. Yes, nobody made much of the original M4's rear seats, but they were there in case the need would arise. On the DTM Champion Edition, they are replaced with a white rollover bar, in high contrast with the Alcantara lining that pads the entire interior. The two people in front sit in carbon fiber bucket seats, while the driver holds an M Sports steering wheel covered in Alcantara featuring a grey "12 o'clock" marker.

The list of convenience features includes air conditioning, adaptive LED headlights, satnav, Park Distance Control all-around as well as dimming rearview mirrors. But whoever buys this car is going to be much more interested in the next set of specs.

The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition uses the same 3.0-liter straight-six engine in the regular M4, only here it develops 500 hp - just like in the M4 GTS. The extra 69 hp help the special edition M4 reach the 60 mph benchmark speed in just 3.8 seconds, and it has a top speed limited at 190 mph (306 km/h). If that feels like reading the GTS' data sheet, it's because the two are exactly the same.

Another important aspect for the new M4 is the exterior design, and once again, the DTM Champion Edition delivers. It is only available in Alpine White, but why would you want it in any other color considering it comes with contrasting exposed carbon fiber elements and those iconic three M stripes at the back.

It's not just the aerodynamics components that are made of the light stuff, but also some body parts like the engine hood or the roof, which use the in-house developed CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). Thes lowered center of gravity will improve the car's handling, as will the individually adjustable 3-way coilover suspension that is mechanically adjustable both for rebound and damping.

The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition will be available immediately, with prices yet to be announced. However, expect this car to cost more than a GTS since it offers the same performance, but more exclusivity. That means a pretty prohibitive price, but its target audience are the car collectors, so it's all been taken into account.
