BMW entered two M3’s GT2 to the “Green Hell”, one driven by Jorg Muller, Augusto Farfus, Uwe Alzen and Pedro Lamy and the other by ex-WTCC champion Andy Priaulx, Dirk Werner, Dirk Muller and Dirk Adorf. The first car claimed overall victory after an eventful race, while the second finished seventh.
Despite gearbox problems causing some scares in the final hours, the #25 BMW M3 GT2 clung to the first place. "During my last stint we lost fourth gear," said Jorg Muller. "The problem gradually got worse. The main priority was to be careful and keep the car in the race. Everything worked out superbly in the end," the German added.
The Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid, driven by Jorg Bergmeister, Richard Lietz, Marco Holzer and Martin Ragginger, was close to claim a historic victory as it led the race throughout the night, only to stop on track with a technical problem a few hours from the end, handing the lead to the BMW.
Porsche had a bad day at the Nurburgring, the title-holding 911 GT3 R driven by Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Marcel Tiemann being taken out in a crash in traffic on Saturday night. Before the crash, the #1 car looked like a favourite to win.
For Audi it was also a frustrating race. After dominating qualifying, problems and incidents affected the fleet of seven R8 LMS. The #97 car of Marc Bronzel, Luca Ludwig, Dennis Rostek and Marcus Winkelhock managed however to claim third place.
