BMW M3 GT2 Art Car to Compete in 24 Hours of Le Mans

The 17th BMW art car will compete in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans race, following a tradition started back in 1975, when the first BMW art car was unveiled.

In those days, it was a BMW 3.0 CSL that tackled the famous endurance race at Le Mans; now, it's an M3 GT2 that's ready to take the field in the same race. The car will carry a livery worked over by American artist Jeff Koons. He photographed multiple race cars at speed, then stretched the images and incorporated them into a massive digital collage. The result will be painted all over the M3's bodywork.

"These race cars are like life, they are powerful and there is a lot of energy. You can participate with it, add to it and let yourself transcend with its energy. There is a lot of power under that hood and I want to let my ideas transcend with the car – it's really to connect with that power", said Jeff Koons.

After the paintwork will be finished, the car will head to the Paris Pompidou Center, where it will make its debut. The next stop will be the Le Mans 24 Hours race, in June, where BMW will field two M3 GT2's. The Art Car, race number 79, will be driven by former FIA WTCC champion Andy Priaulx, Dirk Muller and Dirk Werner, while Jorg Muller, Augusto Farfus and Uwe Alzen will drive the #78 car.

Derived from the road version of the M3, the GT2 is powered by a 4.0 liter V8 engine that delivers 500 horsepower, has an upgraded chassis, racing brakes and is made from lightweight materials. It can reach 100 mph in 3.4 seconds and will participate for the first time at Le Mans 24 Hours.
