Since the Teutonic top speed gentlemen's agreement limits maximum velocity to 155 mph (250 km/h) discussing this part of a machine wearing an Audi, BMW or Mercedes badge can be pretty boring. However, when a BMW M240i overtakes a truck at this speed, things suddenly become attention-worthy.
The velocity adventure in question comes from the piece of footage at the bottom of the page, which bring us an acceleration and top speed test for the Bavarians' recently-refreshed sportscar.

Coming from AutoTop Netherlands, the test gives us a six-minute Autobahn adventure that demonstrates the straight line abilities of the coupe.

Oh, and in case you're wondering how Germany's highway network manages to mix derestricted portions with a low accident rate, we'd like to mention that the infrastructure is only a part of the magic, with driving discipline being the other.

The M240i coup being tested here doesn't pack the optional xDrive. So even though the "drifting" dashboard light may indicate the DSC (stability control in Bimmer language) half-off setting, not its full off mode, this is one risky stunt we wouldn't recommend.

While the transition from the 35i to the 40i has only brought a modest 14 hp increase (335 hp), the real treat comes from the torque boost - the single turbo (twin scroll) 3.0-liter straight-six under the hood now delivers an extra 47 lb-ft ft, offering a total of 369 lb-ft.

It's nice to see the German automaker now offer a "warm" M Performance car with output numbers identical to those of the previous generation's 1M Coupe.

On paper, the M240i can hit the 62 mph mark in 4.6 seconds, when fitted with the eight-speed auto seen here. Go for the six-cog manual, though, and you'll add 0.2 seconds to that time.

Oh, and by the way, the 1M Coupe needs 4.9 seconds to reach the said speed. Even so, you shouldn't mistake acceleration performance for overall driving fun: while the 1M could be too tail-happy for its own good at times, we haven't driven the M240i yet, but we found the M235i handling as being conservative and non-linear.

Now, before we invite you to hit the "play" button below, allow us to remind you BMW M engineers are currently out testing the uber 2er, namely the tentatively named M2 CS.
