Looking over the BMW M235i specs today, I realized something rather alarming for Porsche. Their Cayman model is in grave danger in the US when the Bimmer goes on sale. Why? Let’s take a look.
When it comes to performance, the two are merely separated. The M235i has a 3-liter turbocharged engine that makes 326 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque whilst the Cayman S (forget about the regular Cayman, it’s way out of its league here) has a 3.4-liter naturally aspirated unit that makes 325 HP and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque.

So, pretty close, right? The two are neck’n’neck when it comes to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprints too. The 2er does it in 4.9 seconds whilst the Porsche is just 0.2 seconds faster (manual gearboxes, of course since the PDK isn’t yet available in the US) despite being 600 lbs (270 kg) lighter. On the upside, you can actually carry 2 people in the back of the M235i, whereas in the Cayman....

Looking over the specs just briefly, you’ll notice that the two are closely similar and then you’d find out that BMW plans to release an M Performance kit for the M235i, making it even faster. It also has a limited-slip-differential on the way for the little coupe, alongside all sorts of improvements you can pick yourself, depending on what you want to upgrade.

The final and most compelling argument, though, is the price tag. The Cayman S starts at $63,800 (MSRP) whilst the M235i is $20,700 cheaper. If the Bimmer is also as good on the road as everyone says it is, it’s game over for Porsche!
