BMW M2 customers will start receiving their weapons in spring next year, so it’s nice to say hello to an example of the coupe that has showed up on US roads.
The vehicle has recently been spotted by a Reddit user driving a Porsche (nope, not a Cayman, but a Cayenne). The background of the photo doesn’t resemble those we see in the official wallpapers released earlier this week, but given the time frame, this is obviously a manufacturer’s vehicle.
The M2 in question was dressed in Long Beach Blue, a hue that made its debut on the BMW X6 M this spring. Coincidentally or not, the M2 also shares plenty of rear bumper styling cues with the X6 M.
The Motorsport division’s latest contraption may have used the M235i as a starting point, but with that aggressive body kit and the wider tracks, even an untrained eye could spot the performance injected into the vehicle.
Under the hood of the M2 sits a heavily massaged version of the N55 3-liter straight six, using a twin-scroll turbo. Borrowing parts from the S55 heart of the M3/M4, the powerplant delivers 370 HP at 6,500 RPM and 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque between 1,400 and 5,560 RPM.
For those “Oh, God” moments, you can dip your toes into the engine’s overboost feature, which sees the torque jumping to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) for a short time.
For all the keyboard warriors out there, we’ll mention that the M2 can lap the Nurburgring in 7:52. This puts the Bimmer on par with the Porsche Cayman S (the 981 generation). Then again, the point of this car is to keep your driving spirit alive, so we’re not talking about a machine focused on grip and lap times alone.
If you’re planning to get your hands on one of these cars, be prepared to spend at least $51,000 on it.
