We have been writing our fingers off these days with news from BMW. The German brand is apparently looking to bring in as many customers as possible, and they plan to do so not only with MPVs but new M cars as well.
Last week, we caught wind of the BMW M2 in all its glory, and before that the Germans launched the BMW M4 GTS, which broke several records and brought industry-wide firsts to the world. How about combining the two, though?
It may seem like a crazy idea, but then you need to take a look at how they stack up against each other, especially in terms of pricing. While the M2 starts at just over €50,000, the M4 GTS will be nearly three times as much. That’s a difference of almost €100,000, and that’s a hell of a lot of money.
Therefore, how much would a BMW M2 GTS cost and, possibly even more importantly, how much better would it look? Well, the guys from X-Tomi Designs put together what we consider to be an excellent rendering that could as well become reality.
They started off with the M2 and added the GTS-specific parts on it such as the Acid Orange front splitter, the wheels, a roll cage inside, the CFRP roof, as well as the CFRP wing on the boot lid. Other than that, things remained rather stock in terms of looks. But how would they change under the sheet metal?
If we were to make an educated guess, the N55 engine under the hood could be taken up to around 450 HP. Sounds like a lot? Well, the 3-liter inline 6-cylinder has high potential in terms of tuning and you would, of course, add water-injection cooling to the mix which would easily offer 80 extra horsepower.
In terms of torque, since the M2 is using the same 7-speed DCT gearbox as the M4 GTS, things are not limited by a superior threshold in this regard. Therefore, 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque doesn’t seem like a far-fetched idea.
Chip in the lost weight and the fact that the M2 is already light on its feet at under 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs) and you’d get a car with 450 HP, 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque and a weight of around 1,400 kg (3,086 lbs) ready to pounce. That would indeed be an actual devil on the Nurburgring, possibly undercutting the 7:28 lap time set by the M4 GTS. With a price tag of around €100,000, BMW would have a nice profit to work with here.
