BMW just unveiled the 2 Series Gran Coupe, a rival for the Mercedes CLA-Class four-door coupe. So there's going to be a hot M2 version with 400+ horsepower that will take on the CLA 45, right? Probably not.
The 2 Series family is currently the most diverse in BMW's roster. It includes the Active Tourer, Grand Tourer, the new Gran Coupe, plus two aging 2-door models.
The world is filled with ballistically fast hatchbacks or models that are derived from them. Mercedes moe 35 and 45 AMG models than we can count and the roster just keeps on growing. Meanwhile, Audi puts the 2.5-liter, 400 horsepower turbo engine inside the TT RS, two RS3 models and a couple of new RS Q3 crossovers.
But BMW doesn't believe a true M car can have a small engine. This wouldn't be in line with the core of the brand, while turbo lag can potentially prove to be problematic as well. So an M2 Gran Coupe, like the one in these renderings by Aksyonov Nikita, is unlikely to ever be made.
The renderings add elements from the M2 Coupe to an M235i Gran Coupe, including the chunky bumper and quad exhaust tips. This is no different from the way Mercedes designs its CLA 45 models.
Just because the M2 Gran Coupe won't happen doesn't mean the future of this series is depressing. For starters, BMW is still keeping the M2 around, and we'll always pick a transversal six-cylinder over a longitudinal four-banger every time.
Secondly, there have been rumors of another kind of powertrain. We're talking about the "M140e," system which combines the existing 306 horsepower 2-liter from the M135i with an electric motor to give you a 400+ HP high-tech hybrid setup.
