BMW M2 Convertible Allegedly Leaked, Starts Driver's Car Debate

The BMW M2 Convertible you can see in the images to your right should probably come with a decal reading "never say never" covering its entire body. And that's because, back in February, M2 chief engineer Frank Isenberg seemed to make things clear on this M Division matter, stating that there would be no open-air M2.

Speaking to Australia's Car Advice, the engineer said "there will not be an M2 Convertible. We need to keep it as purist as we did with the 1 Series M Coupe,”. He also went on to explain why the less focused M235i is a much better base for a cruising-savvy cabriolet model.

While that partially seemed to make sense, here we are, looking at what autoblog.nl claims to be a set of photos showing the M2 Convertible. As it often happens with such images, we could be dealing with a Photoshop job and the lack of a source for the pics doesn't help us overcome our trust issues. However, the extended gallery, which also allows us to peek inside the convertible, could mean BMW showrooms will get to accommodate an M2 with a canvas roof.

To put things simply, when BMW evaluated the soft top project, the image-related benefits of the coupe-only path went head to head with the commercial assets of bringing such a car to the market.

Sure, we're far from the supercar segment, where carbon fiber tubs allow automakers to keep the extra bracing-generated weight addition and torsional rigidity loss, the two typical drawbacks the roof-chopping process, to a minimum.

However, as automakers are more and more willing to invest into engineering boosts, open-air sportscars get closer and closer to their fixed-roof equivalents.

So, if the pixels we see here actually end up becoming a metal reality, don't expect the resulting BMW M2 Convertible to lose too many of the Coupe's dynamic attributes.
