If you're a fan of the small sports car, the BMW M2 Competition is a real revelation. It's a much more agile, nimble machine than the M2. It's also pretty fast in a straight line, as you're about to find out from this drag race against the Alfa Romeo 4C a cool Lotus.
It's a very nice video done from the perspective of somebody who owns such a car, not some reviewer who spent an hour with it on an airfield. In any case, we bet all you BMW fans are curious to see how the M2 Competition stacks up against the normal M2.
You see, BMW has a whole hierarchy for the M cars now. At the top, there's the hardcore CS setup, followed by the Competition series, the standard M and the M Performance models like the M240i. But the M2 Competition replaces the M2 in Europe due to emissions tests, and it adds a lot more power, some weight, and costs more too.
As some of you may already know, a stock M2 makes 370 PS or 365bhp. The M2 Competition has a completely different 3-liter engine, borrowed from the M3 together with the carbon strut under the hood. It's pushing 410 PS or 404bhp now.
The first drag race even has a manual version of the M2 alongside the two DCT models. And rather shockingly, the manual gets a much better launch all the time. After that, you can see how the extra power pulls the Competition model ahead. Watch out; there's a female guest driver in this one!
After murdering its predecessors, the M2C takes on a couple of mid-engined toys. At just 240 PS, the Alfa Romeo 4C seems underpowered, but then you remember it weighs less than a ton. You know what else is light? A Lotus; in this case the Exige 350 Sport. Yeah, that's not important for the story, though.
However, while fast, the Competition struggles at the launch and is beaten quite clearly by the Alfa Romeo. Wow, a little Italian car that nobody wants to buy just crushed one of the heroes of 2018.
