The iconic and legendary BMW M1 is about as rare as a Red-Crowned Crane. Being built in just 456 units, the only supercar the Bavarian manufacturer ever built is now regarded as a veritable piece of history.
With a 3.5-liter 6-cylinder mid-mounted engine and a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system, the M1 had 277 HP at its disposal and it was extremely fast (especially for those days).
Being developed in a joint venture between Lamborghini and BMW, the 456 units were built between 1978 and 1981 so the newest M1 you could get would be 32 years old. However, out of the 456 cars built, only 399 were street legal, whilst the other 57 were special-tuned for race purposes.
The one RMAuctions listed was built in 1980 and comes in Henna Red, which makes it even more exclusive since only 72 M1s were ordered in this color. However, the current paint job is not the original one, the car being repainted during previous ownership.
Unfortunately, being imported from Europe and non-federalized, you cannot register it in California, where the car is currently located. The starting price for this piece of BMW history is $150,000 (€115,000) and we can assure you, it's worth every penny.
