BMW M Engines Will Be Derived form Normal Ones, AWD Likely

BMW M division has always shied away from using turbo engines… until that is they came up with the S63 twin-turbo. They also never saw the benefits of having all-wheel drive on their performance cars… except the X5 M and X6 M… and maybe the M550d xDrive, X5 M50d xDrive, X6 M50d xDrive and M135i xDrive… but that's it!

In reality, only the M3, M5 and M6 are left without xDrive, though the normal series cars all come with the stuff. BMW bosses have always said adding weight is not good for performance, but in a recent interview with caranddriver.com, M boss Friedrich Nitschke seemed to have warmed up to the idea.

He said that if customers demand it, M cars could go xDrive in the future. We're pretty sure customers already want it, since even Mercedes conceded defeat and made the E63 AMG available with quattro-rivalling mechanicals.

According to this interview, the V8 used by the M3 and V10 or the M5, which were bespoke M units, are dinosaurs. M GmbH will still make its engines special, and they will still rev higher than the competition, but small turbo units are clearly the way of the future. The next M3 and the M4 coupe/convertible will use a six-cylinder S55 3-liter, derived from the N55 of the 335i.

Nitschke also said that with the 1.5-liter three-cylinder they've developed, it is possible to reach around 185 to 200 horsepower per liter, which could mean hot version of the Active Tourer are coming our way.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
