BMW's M division was born out of the idea of a dedicated car - the M1 was a supercar built with a sole purpose: homologation. Back then the Germans weren't so obsessed with profitability. Today they are.
In a recent interview for Inside Line, Albert Biermann, head of the division's product development admitted that the company would love to be allowed to create its own project once again.
However, he went on saying that the idea has been on the table several times, but a solid business case could not be built, as every BMW development, even the M-badged ones, "have to do with money".
Biermann also addressed the rumors that the world will received an "M" diesel, explaining that the current oil-burning technology isn't advanced enough to meet the division's standards, but he didn't rule out the possibility of the company building such a car one day.
You hear that engineers? From now on, the diesel will be kept out of the performance area forever - all eco and efficiency, so we'll never get a diesel M!
